About Land aan Zee

Land aan Zee is a social-purpose retreat center in Burgh-Haamstede, founded by Liselotte Baeijaert and Michiel Deturck. The center organizes and hosts retreats where guests live according to a healthy rhythm, slow down, and connect with what truly matters—taking time to recharge and reflect. Guests enjoy healthy, plant-based meals, lend a hand with the dishes each day, and reconnect with themselves, others, and nature.

It is structured as a foundation with social and ecological objectives and has no shareholders. Profits are reinvested into the foundation to support its mission and build a modest reserve.

Het is opgezet als Stichting met een sociale en ecologische doelstelling en zonder aandeelhouders. Winst wordt terug in de Stichting gestopt om de missie te ondersteunen en een kleine reserve op te bouwen.

Land aan Zee believes that the world expects something different from us, our leaders, and our organizations. Not more consumption, speed, and constant stimulation, but rather conscious living, honest reflection, and care and respect for living beings and nature. We are severely overstepping our ecological boundaries, thereby undermining life on Earth. We must therefore strive for a society that lives within planetary boundaries and ensures the well-being of all. Land aan Zee aims to set an example of how things can be done differently.

The mission is “a place of service to people, society, and the planet.” The retreats are designed to restore personal balance, improve relationships, and regenerate nature. Land aan Zee operates as a foundation without shareholders; profits are reinvested to support initiatives that align with its social and ecological goals.
Land aan Zee welcomes those seeking meaning and those wishing to create it—everyone looking for peace, inspiration, or balance, as well as those wanting to contribute to a new world. The center focuses on healthcare professionals, volunteers working with vulnerable groups, people experiencing grief, young changemakers, entrepreneurs with innovative ideas, and organizations exploring sustainability and purpose. The center is neutral regarding beliefs, religion, gender, and ethnicity, and aims to make everyone feel welcome.

The retreat center is located in the quiet countryside of Burgh-Haamstede (the Netherlands), near the Oosterschelde and close to the beaches of Schouwen-Duiveland. The address is Stichting Land aan Zee, Meeldijk 11a, 4328 NE Burgh-Haamstede, the Netherlands.

The surrounding area offers rare tranquility, starry skies, and a “unique oasis of silence.” Guests can hear owls, watch geese fly overhead, and enjoy sweeping vistas. Nearby, there are charming seaside resorts, beaches, and villages featuring markets and restaurants. The center is housed in a mix of restored Zeeland barns and new wooden barns, creating an atmosphere of peace and authenticity.

Accommodation and Facilities

There are single and double rooms, as well as two rooms for wheelchair users. Each room has a private bathroom (shower, washbasin, and toilet) and air conditioning. When booking a bed in a double room, you can specify whom you wish to share with; otherwise, you will be paired with someone of the same gender.

The rooms can be locked using a personal badge.

The location features parkingspots for twenty cars, charging points for electric vehicles, a large landscaped garden with a circle of trees, fruit trees, walking paths, an accessible-at-all-times library, a centrally located restaurant serving vegan cuisine, a living area with seating corners, a courtyard, and bicycle rental. There is also a studio for creative activities, a meditation room, a sauna, and a twenty-meter natural swimming pond.

The meals are plant-based (animal-friendly) and prepared using fresh, organic, locally sourced ingredients. Guests can communicate special dietary requirements (gluten-free, lactose-free, etc.) in advance; there is no extra charge for this.

Land aan Zee does not hold a liquor license and asks guests not to consume alcohol during their stay. Any other (non-alcoholic) drinks not included with meals are to be paid for upon departure.

Participants must be of legal age (18+) and are personally responsible for their health and well-being.

Retreat Programs

The center offers three main types of retreats: Solo or Duo Retreats, Land aan Zee retreats, and guest programs. During a Solo or Duo Retreat, you follow the daily rhythm and have plenty of free time; for Land aan Zee retreats, we offer additional activities alongside the morning and evening sessions, sometimes led by ‘Friends of Land aan Zee’ (external professionals). Guest programs are organized by partner organizations.

Solo retreats require a minimum stay of two nights. Land aan Zee retreats and guest programs vary; the schedule lists both short and long options.

Included are full board (three meals a day), bed linen and towels, use of the sauna at scheduled times, coffee, tea, water, and snacks, as well as participation in the daily programs. Not included are tourist tax, private sessions, and additional drinks.

Solo | Duo Retreats

A Solo Retreat allows guests to “unplug” from daily routines and regain their balance in their own way. Participants choose from various activities each day (such as yoga, silent walks, or meditation) while maintaining a healthy daily rhythm and finding space for meaningful encounters.

Guests follow a daily schedule that includes shared meals, morning and evening activities, and daily chores, but are free to spend the rest of their time however they wish. They can read, cycle, explore nature, engage in creative activities, or simply rest.

The rates can be found under ‘solo retreat‘ on our website.

Yes. Guests can book massages, coaching, a sound bowl session, or a nutritional advice session. Some services are offered on-site, while others are provided through the Land aan Zee network. These sessions are not included in the base price and must be requested in advance.

Land aan Zee Retreats

A Land aan Zee Retreat follows the same basic program as the Solo Retreats but adds a unique extra session each day, led by a staff member or by “Friends of Land aan Zee”—professionals who volunteer their expertise. These sessions might include, for example, dance, drawing, writing, Qigong, yoga, or specific workshops.

Yes. If you have specific needs, you can book private sessions such as massage, other forms of bodywork, or coaching. These sessions are not included in the price and must be requested in advance.

Guest programs

Guest programs are retreats or workshops organized by partner organizations at Land aan Zee. Only programs that align with the center’s mission are accepted, and they are listed in the online calendar under “guest programs.”

Information regarding a guest program is provided by the organizing partner. Land aan Zee provides the venue and atmosphere; participants should contact the organizer for registration and details.

Organizing Your Own Retreat or Event

Yes. The entire center can be rented by organizations that align with Land aan Zee’s mission (people, society, or planet). Partners are carefully selected for long-term collaboration.

The center consists of a large restored barn, a new stone barn, two new wooden barns, a landscaped garden, a circle of trees, and a sauna. There are five multi-purpose rooms and twenty guest rooms with en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning.
The center accommodates up to 25 people in twenty rooms, but retreats are organized for groups of 10–25. Larger groups of up to 35 people can be accommodated with the help of nearby lodgings.

Surroundings and Activities

Guests can go hiking or cycling in the surrounding countryside, visit the Oosterschelde, head to nearby beaches, swim in the natural pond, read in the library, paint in the studio, meditate, or relax in the sauna.
